Quercus ilex

For many, the favourite among evergreens. Quercus ilex (holm oak) can grow into a unique and characterful tree that helps define the atmosphere of the garden as a solitary tree.  It is also often used to create year-round privacy and camouflage less attractive views. Depending on how it is combined, it can provide a southern atmosphere or blend in nicely with native species.

The greyish tone found in both its brown twigs and leathery green leaves appeals to many and creates a soft look. The combination with the rougher dark grey bark is beautiful. In the older specimens, the bark is slightly grooved which creates a special texture and shade of colour.

Literally, Quercus ilex means 'Holly oak'. From afar, its leaves are therefore more reminiscent of those of a holly. The acorns betray its true nature.

Green is not just green. When you get to know evergreens better, you soon notice that both leaves and needles come in a huge variety of greens and textures. Even within a species, there can be differences depending on the variety. From the moment you can play with this, you can create wonderful combinations.
